Outdoor Explorers

Starved Rock State Park awaits you and your troop for a fun-filled morning of letterboxing, hiking, and learning about the world of bugs. Search for clues, follow a map, explore nature, and discover a bug or two along the trail. Make a fun snack and a nature project to take home with you! Challenge Course

GSCI’s challenge course offers low and high ropes courses at each site and a variety of ground initiatives designed to enhance student leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, as well as to improve communication, cooperation, support, trust, and risk-taking capabilities. Who: Girls in grades 5- adult Date: Saturday, April 13, 2013, Saturday, April 27, 2013, Saturday, May 4, 2013, or Saturday, May 18, 2013 Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Location: Camp Tapawingo or Camp Widjiwagan Fee: $15 half day,$10 climbing wall only, $30 full day no fee if not participating Min/Max: 6/15 participants Closing Date: 2 weeks prior to each session We will only be accepting paper registration forms for challenge course. Please indicate on registration form if your troop would like to participate in the low or high course. Low courses are typically for the morning sessions and are highly suggested for troops new to the challenge course experience. Take Aim

Try your hand at using a bow and arrow. Learn tips on shooting style and form and work to improve your aim. In addition to learning basic archery, safety rules, and range etiquette, you will have the opportunity to participate in a tournament. This sport of bows and arrows is a blast - especially when shooting at balloons filled with candy! Boating at Peairs

Pick up a paddle and take to the water while you and a buddy take control of your boat. Boaters will learn from boating Instructors, how to prepare and be safe and what to do if something goes wrong before trying it out themselves. While out on Lake Bloomington practice the different paddle strokes to take you where you want and even play a game or two. Come ready to splash as you paddle around. Saddle Up

Saddle Up is a great opportunity to learn many basic aspects of proper horse care and riding. Learn how to halter your horse and how to tie a quick release knot. Assist with grooming and picking out your horse’s hooves. Head out to the arena with your horse and learn how to properly mount and dismount, how to steer, and how to have fun in the saddle. Pull on your boots and climb into the saddle to learn and demonstrate trust exercises and games with your horse. Gain a deeper connection with your horse and an independent seat in the saddle. Guide your horse through an obstacle course and learn how to control your horse at the trot. Soar in the saddle with confidence and independence!
